This couple booked me as their photographer only three weeks out from their wedding date. Michael and Teliece got engaged a few months prior and didn’t want a long engagement. Their first step was booking The Red Earth Venue followed by a hunt for a photographer. While the venue closes during wintertime (December – February), we squeezed in theirs as the final wedding of the season! Here’s how I guided them through the quick planning turnaround as their Moab wedding photographer.
You should choose a wedding photographer with enough experience to not only capture your wedding beautifully, but also add value to your day. It’s important to trust their knowledge and experience in capturing hundreds of weddings.
Michael and Teliece explained that they needed some aid in the wedding planning process because they had chosen to go without a planner. While I can’t play the role of both wedding coordinator and Moab wedding photographer on the day, I’m always happy to assist during the planning process.
Knowing that they wanted to keep the experience as simple and easy as possible, I just knew I had to jump into helping organize and capture their day!
Your wedding photos do more than encapsulate your day, they tell your story. This couple’s first priority was, as they described, “being with our friends and family with zero distractions to remember the moments.” Pulling from my own wedding photography ideas and Moab wedding photographer expertise, they entrusted themselves to the process.
This started with the creation of the perfect wedding photography timeline. Knowing the flow they wanted for their day, we aligned with the sunset and also made sure we didn’t miss any family photos. Launching the day was their getting-ready photos.
The bride and groom got ready at the Hoodoo Moab (the nicest hotel in Moab), Teliece with her two best friends and Michael with his three young sons (also his groomsmen). It was freaking adorable! Originally not thinking they needed these moments captured, in the end, they were very happy that they did! The two groups were so small and intimate, that the time together added a beautiful aspect to the storytelling of their day.
Also included in their wedding photography package was an adventure bridal session. They put their trust completely in me–which I love! Since it was early winter and the temperature was very cold, I knew this meant the crowds would be low. I planned out an awesome route inside Canyonlands National Park with four different locations!
The couple described the experience best: “We were at the edge of the cliffs taking stunning photos for lasting memories. We will always remember the feeling of being in the desert. Traveling and being in nature are very central to our relationship. We are both very outdoorsy people and are constantly outside with our family.”
When searching for intimate wedding locations, Michael and Teliece knew that their focus was a remote spot in nature. Michael’s family owns a construction company that builds buildings similar to The Red Earth Venue so he loved the architecture. He shared, “The architectural design of the venue in the center of the desert provided us with a vision we wanted. Not too many remote desert wedding locations were offered so once we found this location we were sold!”
The groom requested doing the wedding ceremony in front instead of the typical site in the back of the building with the Moab desert as the backdrop. They both loved the idea of being the first couple ever to hold their ceremony on the front steps of the venue. I knew it would be awesome!
Michael described their first experience of Moab as such a core memory they had early on in their relationship that the wedding only expanded. The trend continued when about one and a half years after the wedding, Michaell reached back out to me again. He and Teliece just had their first baby together and asked if I would take some family photos for them as they had added a new member!
Of course, I said yes! It was so fun hanging out with the family again to build more core memories in their beloved spot and meet the precious little girl. I love that my job allows me to meet incredible people who oftentimes turn into lifelong friends!
