Making Your Elopement Happen at the BLM land of Moab Utah

In Moab and the surrounding areas, a significant portion of the land outside of state and national parks is independently managed by the Bureau of Land Management or BLM. Somewhere around 80% of the land in Grand County (where Moab is located) is public land primarily overseen by the BLM.

With overlooks of red rocks and monuments, the area is a bit wild and unpredictable, and just a little more “Moabesque” than the rest. This means increased adventure, privacy and the number of bangers we get to capture together!

Great options exist for both sunrise and sunset with some locations working well for both and others for one versus the other. With BLM elopements, it’s also very possible to find locations with little to zero people present!

The BLM’s oversight of the land ensures that they remain accessible for public use while also preserving the unique landscapes that make Moab a popular destination for nature enthusiasts. With its hikes and arches throughout the trails–this land is spectacular! I hold the privilege of acting as both your photographer and private elopement day guide to the region.

One of the primary differences between BLM land and Moab state and national parks is the permits. It is the responsibility of your Moab elopement photographer (and any other vendor) to obtain a permit for an elopement on BLM land in Moab, Utah.

 PERMITS

I pay an annual fee to hold the required permit and I also must alert the BLM of the time and place where I will be shooting. There are tons of epic elopement ceremony locations within their approved list. The following are a few examples:

You do not need a permit but you will have to obtain a letter of authorization from the BLM. This is very easy to do and at no cost to you.

SEASONS & TOP TIPS

  • Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.
  • Plan your elopement by the season whose weather is most comfortable for you! If it’s going to be cold, we’ll work together to be properly prepared! In warmer seasons, we’ll get started preferably before sunrise to avoid the heat.
  • No matter the season, I always make sure that couples also prepare with plenty of water and snacks.
  • When planning an elopement with guests, be sure to inform them of the terrain so they wear appropriate footwear.
  • Be prepared that most areas of the BLM land in Moab, Utah have zero cellular service.

Average Costs to Expect When Getting Married on BLM Land

  • Marriage license $50 (must be within 30 days of elopement day)
  • A small floral package with a single bouquet and boutonniere can be anywhere from $250 to $800. I love working with Farm Yard, a Moab florist that offers small desert elopement packages.
  • A professional officiant can cost between $350 to $1200 for an adventure elopement.
  • Wedding musicians playing for the ceremony will be the widest price range. An artist newer to the industry could be as low as $250 while an established pro will charge up to $2000. The average pricing I encounter in the Moab, Utah area is around $800 for a solo musician.
  • Then of course there is your elopement photographer in Utah. The price of your elopement photography will likely be your greatest expense.

  • Ask a friend or family member to serve as your wedding officiant.
