This is one of those places that I recommend you go there first. I generally tell all of my couples that they can get married in Moab without having ever visited. For many, their wedding day is their inaugural trip to Moab, Utah! BLM land offers a more off-the-beaten-path adventure so when possible, I advise checking it out before committing to it. You can also have your Moab photographer provide some recommendations! See how much more there is to explore within the BLM land of Moab, Utah.
In Moab and the surrounding areas, a significant portion of the land outside of state and national parks is independently managed by the Bureau of Land Management or BLM. Somewhere around 80% of the land in Grand County (where Moab is located) is public land primarily overseen by the BLM.
With overlooks of red rocks and monuments, the area is a bit wild and unpredictable, and just a little more “Moabesque” than the rest. This means increased adventure, privacy and the number of bangers we get to capture together!
Great options exist for both sunrise and sunset with some locations working well for both and others for one versus the other. With BLM elopements, it’s also very possible to find locations with little to zero people present!
The BLM’s oversight of the land ensures that they remain accessible for public use while also preserving the unique landscapes that make Moab a popular destination for nature enthusiasts. With its hikes and arches throughout the trails–this land is spectacular! I hold the privilege of acting as both your photographer and private elopement day guide to the region.
One of the primary differences between BLM land and Moab state and national parks is the permits. It is the responsibility of your Moab elopement photographer (and any other vendor) to obtain a permit for an elopement on BLM land in Moab, Utah.
I pay an annual fee to hold the required permit and I also must alert the BLM of the time and place where I will be shooting. There are tons of epic elopement ceremony locations within their approved list. The following are a few examples:
You do not need a permit but you will have to obtain a letter of authorization from the BLM. This is very easy to do and at no cost to you.
